Salafist preacher and Internet activist indicted in Germany

Ibrahim Abou-Nagie, a salafi/jihadi preacher very active online, has been indicted in Cologne, Germany. Abou-Nagie, together with Abu Dujana of Bonn, operate as Die Wahre Religion (The True Religion). They are cited in multiple cases including those of the now-deceased Bekkay Harrach, and more recently Robert M. (arrested with an associate attempting to enter Britain whilst in possession of jihadist materials including Inspire magazine), not to mention Arid Uka, the Frankfurt shooter:



Abou-Nagie is charged with legitimization of violence and calling for the destruction of other religions (""Empfehlungen", die Gewalt legitimierten - bis zur Vernichtung Andersgläubiger" in German).

Social network analysis is ongoing. Meanwhile, their Facebook wall is a great place to watch how they react to Abou-Nagie's indictment.

Not surprisingly, the 423 Youtube friends of Die Wahre Religion are in turn linked in some way to, or have otherwise turned up in the course of investigations into, the following (not an all-inclusive list):

As I've said before, repeatedly, we can drive ourselves crazy trying to divine who will be the next terrorist, or we can recognize that the enemy is the community of extremists, and sever the ties that bind them (which frankly seems to be what the Germans are doing).

In honor of the US government agency that thinks this kind of information has no value, because "it's all open source", I present installment number 1, featuring all the people linked to the Youtube account of Die Wahre Religion (http://www.youtube.com/user/AbdulMalikLovesAllah), and who those people are in turn linked to.

In this context, 'investigation' means a set of data was collected (from Youtube and Facebook, generally) after someone either perpetrated a terrorist attack, or was arrested or otherwise came to light as a result of terrorist activity or support for terrorism.

What we see in this and similar studies is a community of activists, from whose midst individuals and small groups will emerge and either attempt to travel to some land of jihad, attempt to perpetrate a terrorist attack at home, or otherwise engage in activism in support of the global jihad. What any of these people say in public may be no indication of their willingness or capability to take action. What they *do* in public - such as uploading videos - may be a better indicator of future behavior. And certainly who they know is critical to assessing the degree of threat they represent. If one takes a broader view of targeting, and seeks to attack the community as a whole, rather than pick out this or that individual who might be a threat, then this data is the beginning of a map of that community.
